"If that plane leaves the ground and you’re not with him, you’ll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life." (*)
We want to invite you, quoting Rick, when he says goodbye to Ilse, to travel Morocco on a motorcycle. We start the trip in Casablanca.
Morocco is a fascinating country. Atlantic and Mediterranean beaches. Two huge mountain ranges, Rif, and Atlas Mountains. Cities and towns full of history. The first university in the world. Cultural traces that come to us from the first sketches of history. And back in time too!
Chefchaouen, the famous Blue City will envelops us with veils of its Islamic and Andalusian influences. Waterfalls, handcrafted tiles and a mountain landscape. We´ll cross the Rif again, this time to the south. Then Fez, the spiritual capital of Morocco. Famous for its Medinas, for its bazaars and mosques and the ancient Arabic buildings.
After crossing the three ranges of the Atlas, the Middle, the High and the Anti-Atlas, and having left behind Midelt, a modern mining and agricultural city in a cool, high valley; we will begin to descent into the Sahara desert that awaits us mysterious, magical and magnetic. That´s where we want to see both the sunrise and sunset over the dunes. Our pictures will exhaust the possible range of gold and red colors!
In Merzouga we will camp...or glamp... in desert. We can use the rest day to play in the dunes with dirt bikes or UTVs, riding Land Cruisers or Camels. Of course we can also rest!
This experience in the massive sand dunes of the Sahara can only be forgotten at least for an instant, if we set focus on the next section of the road. We must reach the Atlantic, and we may ride in some of the famous Paris Dakar Rally tracks. Although the road is paved, the fun and excitement will not cease even for a second. Ouarzazate is a famous location for several Hollywood movies, from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones. The fortified city of Ait Benhaddou stands in the rear view mirror while in the front of our helmets, we start seeing the funny geography of the small Tafraout valley and its painted rocks.
The Atlantic Ocean welcomes us with great waves, choosen by surfers, and a fishing village of white houses spread out on the beach. For a couple of days, the oceanic breeze will join us while we get to the cosmopolitan and interesting Marrakech. Once, the imperial capital, settled in the 11th century, the red city will let us rest from the bike on the day off, but there is too much to see, do and enjoy that the day does not last enough.
Back again in Casablanca, with its 5 million inhabitants and a thriving economy, its rich contemporary architecture and its vibrant cultural life, perhaps it will make us forget that we came looking for a bar. And maybe, if we slow down in the farewell dinner, we´ll listen, again As time goes by! on some piano.
